THE CHICKENING.

Another post about chickens. Seriously. But, it has to be done. Then I'll cram this baby to the brim with lolcats and photos of ponies.

So, I spoke with the Principal Planner again (he's a super nice guy who's been very patient with me) and the hen proposal is back on the agenda, scheduled for March 27th. At this point (from my understanding) it's basically going to either be dismissed or action is going to be taken to legalize hens (what action is yet to be decided, if they don't dismiss it), none of this wishy washy business.

So basically it's go time. One of the JAFH members has already sent a very thoughtful letter to the editor  in support. I'm hoping more people will do the same shortly and we'll have a nice little stack of them. I'm also looking into a final signature gathering at the local Farm and Fleet before the chicks arrive. I'm hoping they'll say yes because who would stand to benefit hen legalization? Yup. This is serious business.

GET READY.

So this will be decided once and for all on March 27th, or as I'm going to start calling it: THE CHICKENING.

Cinnamon Queen

I listened to a lot of Manson
in high school, which I think may
have had something to do with it.
So. Lots of things are going on, and like an asshole I forgot our camera at home and can't load any new photos whilst typing away in my mom's basement. All I need are some 12 sided die and I'm reliving high school. Just kidding, I didn't have enough friends to form a D&D group in high school. (Sad trombone noise)

But what I can report on, is chickens! While we've been on a brief hiatus, the chicken stuff is getting back on track since I'm meeting with someone in the local government Wednesday to see what happens next. Yay! I'm going to be spending a few hours tonight updating our google page which is a veritable wealth of knowledge regarding the keeping of small backyard flocks.

Cinnamon Queens. I'm working on a good Freddy Mercury joke.
And speaking of flocks....I just placed a hen order! Five wee Cinnamon Queen chicks will be at my house at the end of March. I'll watch them until their down is gone then they're off to live with my friend Laurie who already has hens. We're doing a sort of co-op foster home thing. If hens get legalized, they'll come live with us, if not, I'll be a long distance chicken mom that only visits on weekends but lets them do whatever they want so they'll like me better. Either way, we'll get an ass load of eggs every week.

FOR THE HORDE!

Triage and chickens

So for those of you who are unaware, my father is a podiatrist (foot doctor) and has saved my ass many a time when it comes to medical treatment. A first though for our family, was rabbit triage.

A while back Talullah figured out how to chew through the screen door on the bunny bunker and slip out to wiggle into the hidden corners of our studio. I caught her high tailing it into the closet and went right on in after her. She was scrambling around and by the time I caught her, I noticed her foot was bleeding. She'd jacked up one of her toenails pretty nicely and was being very stoic about it. I took her into the bathroom and washed her foot as well as trimming the nail as best I could. I figured her ravenous immune system would take it from there and in a few days we'd be dandy.

I didn't take into account what a flighty little beast she is and how she managed to make her toe even worse not two days later. It was nine at night and I don't have the kind of money you need for the 24 hour vet an hour away, so who did I call? Daddy! He actually came with his doctor bag and sterile tools, bless his heart. He trimmed the effected nail off, swabbed on some antibiotic ointment, and bandaged her like we were playing teddy-bear hospital.

The bandage stayed on for all of ten minutes after he left, but her toe shows no sign of infection and is healing swimmingly. I cannot tell you how much money he saved me, but probably enough to fix him up a fancy dinner as a thank you.

Now that the adorable bunny photos are posted I can get a long to more serious business. Chickens. The second chicken meeting went very well, more people came and everyone now has a job and some plan of action to work on; for instance, some folks are gathering information about local churches that might be interested, others are writing letters, etc. I'm so glad this is becoming a community based effort, there were so many great ideas shared that I never would have thought up; and knowing there are folks who have more experience with this sort of thing on board makes all the difference. Hopefully now we can make some serious steps forward in educating folks and helping our community become a little more sustainable. I'll share the post I made to our facebook wall in case there is someone here reading this and feels inspired to write a letter:
One of the bigger issues discussed at the last meeting was about writing letters. Here is some help for those who would like to write a letter but need a little help. Our google page : https://sites.google.com/site/justafewhens/home has some helpful information for a basic letter to your alderman. And how do you find out who your alderman is anyway? I didn't know until this August! Here is a map to find what ward you live in: http://www.dekalbcounty.org/PDF_INTERNET/GIS/DeKalbWards.pdf . Here is a list of the aldermen by ward: http://cityofdekalb.com/CityCouncil.htm and in the
"contact us" bar are links to individual pages with their email addresses and phone numbers! And if you have any questions you need help with, don't hesitate to email me at hollyhousekitchen@yahoo.com.

On another chicken note, we're getting chicks! Erick and I talked it over and considering how long it might take to get the great hen debate put to roost (HAHA!) we didn't want to miss out on chicks this Spring. Our friend Laurie raises hens outside of town for fun and also sells some of her spare eggs, and she's down to eight hens. I asked her if she'd be our chicken foster mom, and in the case this doesn't get legalized if we could just kick in for food and bedding and do a sort of chicken co-op sort of deal, and she was all for it. So be prepared for lots. and lots. of chick photos.

And finally on a sad note, our laptop is toast. My mom was kind enough to lend us her tablet until we could afford a new computer, but it's fussy and won't let me type in any blogs on it. So I'm going to have to blog from my mom's basement until I can figure the blasted thing out. For something so small, it's effectively infuriating. I can still answer comments, emails, and everything else I normally do, but for some reason it won't let me type in the text box for the blog. *sigh*
